Components of a urinalysis are well explained in under twenty minutes. Although it is well explained, the drawback is that it is entirely drawn out by hand. There are no slides or images to view.

Understanding Lab Values, National Kidney Foundation

The National Kidney Foundation provides a nice summary write up, about two pages in length. it provides a few lines to explain the different lab components. it is written for the patient, but is also a valuable tool for the med student to review and understand.


Understanding Your Lab Work, DaVita

DaVita’s guide to lab work names provides an overview of common tests used to measure kidney function. This guide includes the name of the test, the purpose, normal range, how the test is conducted and when the test may be conducted. The guide is about four pages.

This video walks through one clinical scenario. After the introduction, starting at 0:45, a question is posed with specific lab values. Then, four multiple choice options are presented. Pause the video at 1:20 to answer the question on your own. Then continue to watch the video to hear the analysis of each option.

The video describes creatinine’s normal levels, glomerular filtration rate, and how they relate with a graph. The video is slow, as the narrator is writing notes as he speaks.  Great pace to take notes with. If you're just listening, you may want to speed it up.


Interpretation of Lab Tests in Chronic Kidney Disease, Nephrology On-Demand (1:52)

This video describe the markers of kidney function (Creatinine and BUN), estimates of GFR (creatinine clearance and eGFR), measurements of proteinuria (microalbuminuria, urinary microalbumin-to-creatinine ratio), and 24 hour urine protein. It’s a quick video with no narration. It’s easy to skim through for notes, as it is well organized.
